Optimal Aluminum-Assisted Mesoporosity Development in MFI Zeolites by
Desilication. — The presence of framework Al plays a key role in the mechanism of
mesopore formation in MFI zeolites in alkaline medium. High Al concentrations in the
MFI zeolite framework prevent Si from being extracted, and thus limited pore formation is obtained, whereas highly siliceous zeolites show excessive and unselective Si
dissolution, leading to creation of relatively large pores. A framework Si/Al ratio of
25—50 is optimal for a substantial intracrystalline mesoporosity combined with
generally preserved Al centers. The regulating role of framework Al enables well-controlled desilication of MFI-zeolites, which offers great potentials in diffusion-limited
applications, especially those in which acidic sites are favorable. — (GROEN*, J. C.;
