Pitting Corrosion of Bulk Glass-Forming Zirconium-Based Alloys. — The polarization behavior of glassy Zr59Ti3Cu20Al 10Ni8 alloy samples is characterized in 1 N
H2SO4 containing 0.01—0.2 N NaCl. The corroded sample surfaces are characterized
by SEM, EDX, and Auger electron spectroscopy. The alloys exhibit an excellent passivation ability in acidic halide-free environments at room temperature, but a high pitting susceptibility in the presence of chloride ions. Once pitting is initiated, a fast
homogeneous pit propagation into the highly reactive amorphous phase occurs. The
results indicate that the initiation of pitting can be hardly suppressed on samples prepared under practice-relevant conditions. Inhibition of pitting processes may be possible by further development of alloy compositions showing an extremely high repassivation ability. — (KAMACHI MUDALI, U.; BAUNACK, S.; ECKERT, J.;
