Improved Preparation and Structural Investigation of 4-Aryl-4-oxo-2-hyAcids and Methyl Esters. — A simple alternative general proce47- 085 droxy-2-butenoic
dure for the synthesis of ketoenol esters (IV) from aryl methyl ketones (I) is reported.
This new protocol involves the isolation of the sodium keto enolate (III) as key step.
Enolate (III) can be hydrolyzed under soft conditions into ester (IV) whereas harder
conditions afford ketoenol acid (V). Advantages over previously reported procedures
