are prepared from readily available precursors applying standard transformations. For
the synthesis of target compounds (V) and (VIIIa) bearing two carboxylic groups, a new
saponification protocol leading to half-esters, is developed. The final methylenation
step is modified for several derivatives by generation of the ylide with BuLi in the presence of catalytic amounts of iPr2NH, or by use of tBuOK instead of LDA. A study of
the radical homopolymerization and radical copolymerization of the new cyclopropylacrylates with methyl methacrylate reveals that (VIIIb) and (VIIIc) give significantly higher polymer yields, glass transition temperatures, and drastically improved reactivities compared to those obtained from 1,1-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)-2-vinylcyclopropane. — (DE MEIJERE*, A.; BAGUTSKI, V.; ZEUNER, F.; FISCHER, U.
