The Silicides EuIr2Si2 and Lu5Si3. — The structures of the title compounds, both
obtained from the elements, are determined by single crystal XRD. EuIr2Si 2 crystallizes
in the tetragonal space group I4/mmm with Z = 2 (BaAl4 type structure) and Lu5Si3 in
the hexagonal space group P63/mcm with Z = 2 (Mn5Si3 type). The Ir and Si atoms in
EuIr2Si2 form a three-dimensional [Ir2Si2] network with Ir—Si and Si—Si interactions.
The Eu atoms occupy the cages of this network. The structure of Lu5Si3 contains
columns of face-sharing, empty Lu6 octahedra and isolated Si atoms in a distorted
