Quaternary Strontium Copper(I) Lanthanoid(III) Selenides with Cerium and
Praseodymium: SrCuCeSe3 and SrCuPrSe 3, Unequal Brother and Sister. —
Single crystal of the title compounds are grown from mixtures of Sr, Cu, Ln (Ln: Ce,
Pr), and Se in a CsI flux (800 °C, evacuated silica tube, 7 d). Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 4 but with different structures. The
structure of SrCuPrSe3 contains layers formed by CuSe4 tetrahedra and chains of
edge-sharing PrSe6 octahedra. The layers are interconnected by the Sr2+ cations which
are coordinated by seven Se atoms. In SrCuCeSe3, both the Ce3+ and the Sr 2+ cations
adopt a coordination number of seven and these cations statistically occupy two independent sites with equal ratios. The Cu+ cations and (Ce/Sr)Se7 polyhedra form strongly
puckered layers which are connected by the Ce(2)3+/Sr(2) 2+ cations. — (STROBEL,
