Catalytic Behavior of Rare-Earth Sulfates: Applications in Organic Hydrogenation and Oxidation Reactions. — The compounds NH4Ln(SO4)2·H2O (Ln: Y, Ho) are
synthesized hydrothermally from solutions containing Ln(NO3)3, propylamine, DMSO,
and HF (autoclave, 170 °C, 7 d). As revealed by single crystal XRD, both compounds
crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/n with Z = 4. Their three-dimensional
structure contains helical channels built from isolated LnO8 polyhedra alternating with
the two kinds of sulfate groups. The NH+4 cations are located inside the channels. The
materials are active catalysts in hydrogenation reactions of olefins and nitroaromatics,
and in highly selective H2O2-mediated oxidation of organic sulfides. Reusability with
no degradation of selectivity, activity, or yield are among the advantages of these solid
