New Cationic Clathrate: Synthesis and Structure of [Si40 P6]I6.5. — The new title
compound is synthesized from a stoichiometric mixture of powdered Si, red phosphorus, and iodine (sealed silica ampoule, 925 K, 6 d). As revealed by single crystal XRD,
[Si40P6]I6.5 crystallizes with the type-I clathrate structure (cubic, space group Pm3n,
Z = 1) with a minimal unit cell volume and a remarkably high vacancy concentration.
The structure consists of a three-dimensional framework composed of Si and P atoms,
