Synthesis, Structural, and Magnetic Characterization of a New Ferrimagnetic
Oxide: YFeMnO5. — The title compound is synthesized by heating citrate precursors
obtained from stoichiometric solutions of Y2O3, FeC2O4, and MnCO3 in citric acid under 200 bar O2 at 900 °C (12 h). As revealed by powder neutron diffraction, YFeMnO5
crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbam. The structure contains infinite
chains of edge-sharing MnIVO6 octahedra, which are linked together by FeIIIO5 pyramids and YO8 units. The compound is semiconducting with a large room temperature
resistivity. Magnetic susceptibility data and the thermal powder neutron diffraction patterns reveal the onset of a ferrimagnetic structure below about 165 K. — (MUNOZ*,
