The Structure of Catalytically Active Gold on Titania. — Well-ordered Au monolayers and bilayers that completely cover an ultrathin TiO2 surface that is grown on a
Mo(112) surface are prepared. As revealed by high-resolution electron energy loss
spectroscopy and CO adsorption the Au atoms are bonded to Ti atoms. Kinetic measurements for the oxidation of CO show that the Au bilayer structure is catalytically
