Spontaneous Formation of Inorganic Paper-Like Materials. — Ordered porous
manganese oxide paper-like membranes of composition KMn2.65O5.40·0.17H2O are pre01- 204 pared
by heating a stoichiometric mixtures of K2SO4, K2S2O8, and MnSO4 in H2O under
hydrothermal conditions (Teflon vessel, 250 °C, 4 d) to produce a precursor suspension
which is then heated at 85 °C for 24 in the presence of a Teflon substrate. The membranes have a metallic luster and can be folded or cut into various shapes. They remain
malleable, and one can write on them. The new material can have applications over a
broad range of temperatures, from -74 to 550 °C. The thermal behavior at low and high
temperatures suggests a variety of potential uses of these materials, from aerospace applications in spacecraft and satellites, to applications for high-temperature separations,
