Unusual Charge Distribution in Na7(CoO3)2. — Single crystals of the title compound are synthesized from stoichiometric mixtures of Co3O4, NaN3, and NaNO3
(450 °C, 100 h) followed by annealing at 500 °C for 1000 h. Single crystal XRD
reveals that the compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4.
There is only one independent position of Co atoms, which is trigonally planar coordinated by oxygen. The CoO3 triangles with Co in an average oxidation state of +2.5 are
isolated from each other. No charge ordering is detectable by XRD at 100 K.
Na7(CoO3)2 shows Curie—Weiss behavior down to ≈75 K. Onset of antiferromagnetic
behavior occurs at 11 K. The compound is semiconducting with a bandgap of 0.495 eV.
