Chiral Norbornadienes as Efficient Ligands for the Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric 1,4-Addition of Arylboronic Acids to Fumaric and Maleic Compounds.

The title catalyst (R,R)-BHD with the bulky mesityl groups affords the 1,4-addition
products in good yields and with very good enantioselectivity. Phenyl instead of mesityl
groups in the norbornadiene catalyst leads to the lower yields but comparable enantioselectivity. In contrast, known phosphorus-based chiral ligands afford the products
