Vilsmeier—Haack Synthesis of Aromatic Aldehydes Using Bis-(Trichloromethyl)
and Dimethylformamide. — Formylation of electron-rich aromatic and

heteroaromatic substrates using a combination of dimethylformamide and bis(trichloromethyl) carbonate (instead of POCl3 or phosgene) is a viable process which avoids
the formation of phosphorous salts. In comparison to the synthesis of aldehydes using
known Vilsmeier—Haack reagents, the major advantages of this new procedure are its
