Studies on Substitution of Nitro Groups in 1,3,5-Trinitrobenzene with NH-Azoles.
The nitro groups in trinitrobenzene (Ia) can be substituted with various NH-azoles

(II), (IX) and (XI) under alkaline conditions. The influence of substrate structure on the
reaction outcome is studied, and it is shown that the regioselectivity in the reaction of
triazole derivatives strongly depends on the substitution pattern. All three nitro groups
of trinitrobenzene can be replaced successively since the introduced triazolyl groups
[cf. (IVa) and (V)] have an activating effect comparable to the nitro group itself. —
