Praseodymium Diiodide, PrI2, Revisited by Synthesis, Structure Determination
and Theory. — The title compound is synthesized from mixtures of PrI3 and Pr in a
molar ratio of 1.44:1 (1050 °C, 10 h). Two modifications, PrI2-IV and PrI2-V are obtained in different ratios upon fast and slow cooling, respectively. As revealed by single
crystal XRD, PrI2-IV crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3m with Z = 3 and PrI2-V
in the cubic space group F43m with Z = 16. The two modifications of PrI2 are further
characterized by first principles electronic band structure calculations. —
