Radical Deoxygenation of Hydroxyl Groups via Phosphites. — A variety of alcohols are deoxygenated by a two-step sequence involving the conversion of the alcohols
into phosphites and subjection of the latter to standard radical conditions. The method
is particularly efficient for the reduction of relatively hindered alcohols, including tertiary alcohols. In all cases, minor amounts of phosphonate side products (VII) and of
type (VIII) are formed, which can be easily separated from the reaction mixture. —
