Hexamethylenetetraamine-Bromine Catalyzed Rapid and Efficient Synthesis of
— The title compound catalyzes electrophilic substitution
06- 117 Bis(indolyl)methanes.
reactions of indoles (II) and (IV) with carbonyl compounds (I) furnishing
bis(indolyl)methanes in almost quantitative yields. Since the more active site C-3 is
blocked in the case of indoles (IV), the substitution takes place at C-2. In view of the
importance of the dipyrrylmethane synthesis concerning the preparation of porphyrins,
this method is extended to pyrrole (VII) and carbonyl compounds (VI) as reagents. The
inexpensive catalyst, as well as mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, and
excellent yields are the most interesting features of this procedure. — (BANDGAR*,
