Crystal Structures of Ca4Ir8P7 and Ca4Ir 8As 7 and the Relationship to the ThCr2Si2
Type Structure. — Single crystals of the title compounds are grown from mixtures of
the elements in a Pb flux at 1100 °C. Ca4Ir8P7 and Ca4Ir8As7 crystallize in a new structure type in the monoclinic space group P21/m (Z = 2). Seven of the eight Ir atoms are
coordinated tetrahedrally by P and As atoms, respectively. In contrast to the ThCr2Si2
type, the tetrahedra are not linked to layers, but they form different bands which are
connected via the 8th Ir atom to a three-dimensional network with the Ca atoms in the
