New Arsenides with As--Chains and -Rings: BaAs2 and AIBa2As5 (AI: K, Rb). —
The title compounds, which are classical Zintl phases with As- anions isosteric to elemental chalcogens, are synthesized from the elements at 900 °C. Their structures are
determined by single crystal XRD. In BaAs2 (monoclinic, space group Pc, Z = 6) anionic chains in two different conformations are present, which differ from those observed in the structure of KBa2As5 (orthorhombic, space group Cmc21, Z = 4). In contrast, RbBa2As 5 (trigonal, space group P3121, Z = 3) contains puckered five-membered
A s55 - rings. The parameters influencing the formation of rings and different types of
chains will be discussed on the basis of a geometry analysis of the anions and calculated
