Search for Perovskite-Type New Borides in the Sc—TM—B (TM: Ti, V, Cr, Mn,
Fe, Co, and Ni) Systems. — ScNi3B0.5 is synthesized by arc melting of a mixture of
the elements in the atomic ratio Sc:Ni:B = 1:3:1 followed by annealing at 1573 K
for 20 h. As revealed by powder XRD the compound crystallizes with the cubic perovskite-type structure in the space group Pm3m. ScNi3B0.5 exhibits metallic behavior down
to 4.2 K and shows Pauli paramagnetism as indicated by susceptibility measurements.
No superconductivity is observed down to 2 K. The compound is further characterized
by measurements of the micro-Vickers hardness and oxidation resistance in air. —
