Ion-Conducting Sodium Nickel Borate, Na2Ni2B12O21, with an Open Channel
Structure. — The title compound is prepared by solid state reaction of Ni3(BO3)2,
Na2B4O7, and H3BO 3 (open Ni-crucible, 800 °C, 6 h). The structure of Na 2Ni 2B12O21 is
refined by Rietveld analysis of powder XRD data (space group I2/a, Z = 4). The structure consists of a three-dimensional B—O framework with embedded dimers of distorted, edge-sharing NiO6 octahedra. Na+ ions located in the channels of this framework
become mobile at temperatures above 480 °C as shown by measurements of the electrical conductivity. This means that the title compound is a solid electrolyte. —
