Rare Beryllium Icosahedra in the Intermediate Valence Compound CeBe13. —
Single crystals of CeBe13 are synthesized from a mixture of Ce, Be, and Al in the atomic
ratio of 1:14:32 (BeO crucible, 1200 °C, flowing He). As revealed by single crystal
XRD, CeBe13 crystallizes with the NaZn13-type structure in the cubic space group
Fm3c with Z = 8. Twelve Be atoms form an icosahedron with an isolated Be atom
located in the center of the polyhedron. CeBe13 is further characterized by restricted
Hartree—Fock calculations and magnetic susceptibility measurements. — (WILSON,
