New Selective Metal-Free Oxidations of Primary Alcohols by HNO3 or HNO3 and
O2, Catalyzed by Br2. — Benzylic alcohols (I) are oxidized by bromine to the corresponding aldehydes (II). Bromine is regenerated by HNO3, which itself is regenerated
by the addition of oxygen to the biphasic reaction mixture. Primary alcohols (III) give
the corresponding esters (IV). Secondary alcohols do not react, because of the formed
αbromo ketones, which inhibit the catalytic cycle of bromine regeneration. —
