Syntheses, Thermal Stability, and Structure Determination of the Novel Isostructural LnBa3B9O18 (Ln: Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb). — The
title compounds are prepared by solid state reaction of BaCO3, Ln2O3 (Ln: Y, Pr, Nd,
Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) or Tb4O7, and H3BO3 (800—930 °C, 2—3 d). Single
crystals of YBa3B9O18 are obtained from a melt of BaYB9O16 . The isostructural
LnBa3B9O18 compounds crystallize in the hexagonal space group P63/m with Z = 2. The
structure consists of planar B3O6 groups, regular YO6 octahedra, and irregular BaO6 and
BaO9 polyhedra. The DTA and TGA curves of YBaB9O16 show a weight loss at about
955 °C associated with the decomposition into YBO3, B2O3, and YBa3B9O18 due to its
incongruent melting behavior. DTA and TGA results show that YBa3B9O18 is chemically stable and melts congruently. — (LI, X. Z.; WANG, C.; CHEN*, X. L.; LI, H.;
