Effect of π-Accepting Substituent on the Reactivity and Spectroscopic Characteristics of Triarylbismuthanes and Triarylbismuth Dihalides. — The electronic

of p-substituents on the oxidative chlorination of triarylbismuthanes to form bismuth dichlorides (II) is studied by competitive reactions against triphenylbismuthane.
With increasing electron-withdrawing ability of the p-substituents, the relative ratio of
p-substituted triarylbismuth dichloride (IIa) or (IIc)—(IIg) to triphenylbismuth dichloride (IIb) decreases. Palladium-catalyzed degradation of dichlorides (II) and their
difluorides (III) yields biaryls (IV). In the presence of Pd(OAc)2, (II) give (IV) quickly
and in good yields. By use of Pd(PPh3)4 catalyst, with increasing electron-withdrawing
nature of the substituents, the reactivity increases and such tendency is more remarkable for (II) than for difluorides (III). — (RAHMAN, A. F. M. M.; MURAFUJI*, T.;
