Nickel Formate Route to the Growth of Carbon Nanotubes. — Ni(O-CHO)2·2H2O
an ideal precursor for formation of Ni nanoparticles with a controllable size and a

size distribution. The freshly formed Ni nanoparticles are catalytically very
active, leading to highly efficient growth of carbon nanotubes. Growth of randomly distributed and vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on flat surfaces are realized by either
CVD or plasma-enhanced CVD using the nickel formate route. As the method of
deposition of the catalyst is solution-based, it has the merits of low-cost, ease of operation, large-area growth, and suitability for coating three-dimensional substrates with
