Mo2P4O15 — The Most Complex Oxide Structure Solved by Single Crystal
Methods? — The title compound is prepared by heating a 3:1 molar mixture of
(NH4)2HPO4 and MoO3 in a Pt crucible to 873 K. As revealed by single crystal XRD
at 120 K, Mo2P4O15 crystallizes in the space group Pn with Z = 42. In the structure
MoO6 octahedra share five of their six corners with P4O13 units made of corner-sharing
PO4 tetrahedra. Despite the simple formula, the compound has 441 crystallographically
unique atoms in its asymmetric unit and thus has the most complex structure of any
