A New Superconducting Phase of Sodium Cobalt Oxide. — The new NaCoO2
phase with a P3 structure is prepared from α-NaCoO2 (obtained by heating a mixture
10- 007 of
Na2O2 and Co3O4 at 600 °C for 8 h under O2) immersed in an MeCN solution of bromine for 5 d. As revealed by powder XRD it crystallizes in the space group R3m and
consists of CoO2 layers separated by thick insulating layers of Na+ and H2O. A
three-layer periodicity of the CoO2 stacking sequence exists in the P3 material, in contrast to a two-layers one in the P2 superconducting phase described previously. The new
phase exhibits a superconducting transition at 4.6 K. — (TAKADA*, K.; SAKURAI,
