Comparison of Pb—Sm—Sn and Pb—Ca—Sn Alloys for the Positive Grids in a
Acid Battery. — The anodic behavior of Pb—0.73 wt% Sm—0.63 wt% Sn and
10- 020 Lead
Pb—0.088 wt% Ca—0.63 wt% Sn alloys in H2SO4 solution is characterized by linear
sweep voltammetry, impedance—time measurements, and cyclic voltammetry. Sm in
the Pb—Sm—Sn alloy inhibits the growth of the anodic PbO2 corrosion layer formed
on the alloy. Moreover, the rate of O2 evolution at the Sm containing alloy electrode is
lower than that at the Ca containing alloy electrode. The capacity loss of a battery with
Pb—Sm—Sn positive grids is significantly less than that of a battery with Pb—Ca—Sn
