A Correlation Between Number of π Electrons and Structures of Chalcogen-Nitrogen Compounds. — A cage rule for S—N compounds is elucidated,
Σπ = 4n + 4 (n = 0, 1, 2, 3) or Σπ = 4n* (n* = 1, 2, 3), and its validity is tested using
SN compounds with known structures. The rule is also applied to the structures of some
recently prepared Se and Te nitrogen compounds. Predictions are made for the synthesized compounds as well as the postulated intermediates. The results prove that the cage
rule is a meaningful supplement to Hückel's rule in chalcogen—nitrogen chemistry.
