Nonquenchable Chemical Order—Disorder Phase Transition in Yttrium Oxyfluoride. — As revealed by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction YOF crystallizes in
two polymorphic structures separated by the F/O order—disorder phase transition at
560 °C. The high-temperature form features a cubic Fm3m fluorite structure in which
the O and F atoms are disordered on the tetrahedrally coordinated sites. The low-temperature form crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R3m. The superstructure
contains layers of [OY4] and [FY4] tetrahedra alternating along the c-axis of the trigonal
