Pt-Dumbbells in Ba3Pt 2: Interplay of Geometric and Relativistic Effects on Pt—Pt
Bonding. — The title compound is prepared by reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of
the elements at 1223 K (argon, sealed Ta tube, 2 d) and characterized by single crystal
XRD and electrical resistivity measurements. Ba3Pt2 crystallizes with the Er3Pt2 type
structure in space group R3 with Z = 9. The Pt atoms are present in pairs at a distance
of 303 pm. Based on band structure calculations covalent bonding in the Pt dumbbells
is assumed, although it is weaker in Ba3Pt2 than in the isotypic compound Ca3Pt2. Ba3Pt2
exhibits metallic conductivity with a room temp. resistivity of 0.7 mΩ·cm. —
