Reversible 300 K Ferromagnetic Ordering in a Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor.
As revealed by electronic absorption spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility

measurements Co2+ :ZnO shows a reversible 300 K feromagnetic ordering that can be
switched between "on" and "off" states with quantitative reproducibility by introducing
and removing interstitial Zn, the native n-type defect of ZnO. A double-exchange
mechanism for ferromagnetism is suggested that involves electron delocalization
among substitutionally doped cobalt ions. The results present new opportunities for
