Spectroscopic Investigation of the System TeCl4/[NEt4]PF6 in Solution and the
Crystal Structure of [NEt4]2[Te2Cl 10]. — Solutions containing TeCl4 and Et4N+ P F-6
in CH2Cl 2 are studied by UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy. The formation of a TeIV—PF6
complex, presumably [TeCl+3 P F-6 ], is detected by 19F NMR in solutions containing
excess P F-6 . Even a fivefold excess of Cl- over P F-6 does hardly lead to dissociation of
this complex. Crystals of [NEt4]2[Te2Cl 10] are obtained from a TeCl4/Et4NPF6 1:4 solution. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 4. The two
crystallographically independent [Te2Cl10 ]2- anions of the structure demonstrate that
slight variations in the crystal environment can have substantial influence on the interatomic distances within the two chloride bridges of the [Te2Cl10]2- anion. —
