Synthesis and Crystal Structures of α- and β-Mg2[(UO2)3(SeO4)5](H2O) 16. —
Greenish-yellow crystals of α-Mg2[(UO2)3(SeO4)5](H 2O) 16 (I) and elongated yellowish
plates of β-Mg2[(UO2)3(SeO4)5](H2O) 16 (II) both precipitate upon slow evaporation of
an aqueous solution of UO2(NO3)2, MgO, and H2SO4. (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic
space group C2/c with Z = 4 and (II) in the orthorhombic space group Pbcm with Z = 8
(single crystal XRD). Both structures are based on sheets of composition
[(UO2)3(SeO4 )45 - ], which are nearly planar and parallel to (001) in the α-modification
and strongly corrugated and parallel to (010) in the β-form. Three-dimensional linkage
of the sheets is provided by hydrogen bonding with [Mg(OH2)6]2+ octahedra located in
