The Crystal Structures of the High-Temperature Phases of Ag4Mn3O8. —
Two first order, endothermic, reversible structural phase transitions are detected in
Ag4Mn 3O8 by in-situ powder XRD and by DSC. At 477 K Ag4Mn3O8 undergoes a structural phase transition from the room temperature α-phase (space group P3121, Z = 12)
to a β-phase (space group R32, Z = 12) and further transforms into a γ-phase (space
group P4332; Z = 4) at 689 K. Whilst the Mn3O8 framework does not change significantly upon heating, rearrangements of the silver atoms located in the cavities of the
framework are found to be the driving force for the transitions. The structural changes
with increasing temperature proceed along a path of minimal group-supergroup relations between the respective space groups. — (AHLERT, S.; DINNEBIER, R.;
