Formation and Structure of Iodotrinitrosyliron, [Fe(NO)3I]. — The title compound is prepared by passing a stream of NO over solid Fe(CO)4I2 [1. 80 °C, 4 h (NO);
2. 25 °C, 12 h (without NO); 3. 115 °C, 4 h (NO)]. Solid [Fe(NO)3I] readily loses NO
to give [(ON)2Fe(µ-I) 2Fe(NO)2]. The structure of [Fe(NO)3I] is determined by XRD at
200 K (space group P63mc, Z = 2) and shows tetrahedral coordination with N—Fe—N
and N—Fe—I angles of 110.3° and 108.6°, resp., and bent Fe—N—O groups (166.5°).
Monomeric [Fe(NO)3I] and dimeric [Fe(NO) 2I] 2 can be clearly distinguished by their
