Crystal Growth, Defect Structure and Magnetism of New Li3N-Derived Lithium
Nitridocobaltates. — Single crystals of Li1.99Co 0.53N are prepared by reaction of Li3N
with Co foil (923 K, 6 d). A bulk powder sample of Li1.95Co 0.6N is prepared under similar conditions using Co powder. As revealed by single crystal XRD, Li1.99Co0.53N crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6/mmm with Z = 1. It contains significant Li+
vacancies disordered within Li—N planes and exists as partially delocalized spin system as a result of increased covalency through infinite —N—(Li,Co)—N— chains.
