(AgI)2Te6 and (AgI)2Se6: New Composite Materials with Cyclic Te6 and Se6 Molecules Stabilized in the "Solid Solvent" AgI. — The new, deeply colored title compounds are prepared by hydrothermal reaction of Ag and Se or Te with conc. aq. HI
(220 °C, autoclave, 5 d). (AgI)2Te6 and (AgI)2Se6 crystallize in the orthorhombic space
group Pmna with Z = 4 (single crystal XRD) and are isotypic with CuBrSe3. The structures contain cyclic Te6 and Se6 molecules in chair conformation stabilized in a matrix
of AgI. Whereas Se6 molecules are well known as isolated species in rhombohedral
selenium, Te6 molecules are not known to exist in any modification of that element. The
new compound (AgI)2Te6 and Re6Te10 Cl6(Te6) are the only examples of composite materials containing the cyclic Te6 molecule. — (DEISEROTH*, H.-J.; WAGENER, M.;
