a Reaction Medium Containing a Catalyst. — The title reaction proceeds with high
efficiency in fluorous ether (FLE) and a fluorous Pd carbene complex, generated in situ,
as catalyst. The insolubilities of the acid coupling products (III), (VII), and (X) in FLE
allow facile separation of FLE and products by simple filtration. The FLE filtrates containing the catalyst can be recycled for further runs. The ester products (V) do not precipitate in FLE and traditional fluorous/organic biphasic work-up is performed. To suppress the partial leaching of the catalyst to organic phase, a phosphine ligand FPH is
