Structural Reinvestigation of Ammonium Hypophosphite: Was Dihydrogen
Bonding Observed Long Ago? ? In order to explore the "dihydrogen bonds" proposed in 1934 to be present in NH4H2PO 2, the structure of this compound is redetermined by modern tools with high resolution and with a focus on the hydrogen atoms.
The single crystal XRD results show that NH4H2PO2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic
space group Cmma. Each N H+4 ion is surrounded by four H2 P O-2 ions in such a way
that each O atom participates in a bifurcated hydrogen bond. Molecular orbital calculations are performed to investigate the charge density and the bond polarity of the
P?H bonds and to assess their potential for participation in dihydrogen bonds. Neither
the theory nor the X-ray structure supports the original claim of HиииH interactions in
