Crystal Structure of RbAl2Tb 4F22: A Second Example of Mixed-Valence Fluoroterbate with a Random Distribution of Tb3+ and Tb4+ Ions. — Single crystals of
the new TbIII/TbIV mixed-valent title compound are prepared by reaction of a 1:2:4 molar mixture of RbCl, AlF3, and TbF4 in a fluorine gas flow (650 °C, 24 h). RbAl2Tb4F22
crystallizes in tetragonal space group I4/mmm with Z = 2. The structure contains
edge-sharing TbF8 dodecahedra with statistical distribution of Tb3+ and Tb4+ ions. The
chains are interconnected via common vertices to a three-dimensional framework with
two kinds of channels parallel to the tetragonal c-axis. One chain contains Rb+ ions and
the other one is occupied by zigzag-chains of corner-sharing AlF6 octahedra. —
