Tin Nanoparticle Loaded Graphite Anodes for Li-Ion Battery Applications. —
Nearly monosized Sn nanoparticles of average particle sizes of 3.5 and 10.0 nm are
prepared by NaBH4 reduction of (phen)SnCl4 (phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) in H2O and
subsequently dispersed in graphite. The resulting nanocomposites are characterized as
active anode materials for Li ion batteries. The 10.3 wt% 3.5 nm Sn-graphite nanocomposite displays a high reversible Li+ storage capacity of 415 mAh/g, of which 91.3%
can be retained after 60 charge/discharge cycles. This is a significant improvement over
previous efforts on Sn-based graphite composites reported in the literature. —
