Syntheses, Structures, and Ion-Exchange Properties of the Three-Dimensional
Framework Uranyl Gallium Phosphates, Cs4[(UO2)2(GaOH)2(PO4)4]·H2O and
Cs[UO2Ga(PO 4)2]. — The structure of (IV) is solved from a twinned crystal (monoclinic, space group P21/c, Z = 4) revealing a three-dimensional framework structure
consisting of infinite ∞1[Ga(OH)(PO4 )42 - ] chains formed by corner-sharing GaO6 octahedra and bridging PO4 tetrahedra. The gallium phosphate substructure is linked by
edge-shared dimers of UO7 polyhedra resulting in a three-dimensional

∞ [(UO 2)2(GaOH)2(PO4 )4 ] framework with intersecting channels which are occupied

by Cs ions and water molecules. The structure of (VI) (triclinic, space group P1, Z = 2)
contains ∞1[Ga(PO4 )32 - ] chains formed by fused eight-membered rings of corner-sharing
GaO4 and PO4 tetrahedra. The chains are also linked by edge-sharing UO7 dimers to a
three-dimensional ∞3[UO2Ga(PO4 )-2] framework having channels that contain the Cs +
cations. Ion-exchange studies indicate that the Cs+ cations in both compounds can be
