Crystalline, Mixed-Valence Manganese Analogue of Prussian Blue: Magnetic,
Spectroscopic, X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction Studies. — Orange-red colored,
transparent crystals of Mn3[Mn(CN)6]2·zH2O (z = 12—16) are synthesized by slow diffusion of an aqueous solution of MnCl2 in a gel consisting of Agar and KCN in H2O
under aerobic conditions (38% yield). The compound is characterized by low-temperature single crystal optical spectroscopy, single crystal XRD, neutron diffraction, and
magnetic susceptibility measurements. It contains N-bonded high-spin Mn(II), and
C-bonded low-spin Mn(III) ions arranged in a disordered, face-centered cubic lattice.
Neutron scattering experiments indicate a ferrimagnetic structure below 35.5 K. —
