Mg35Cu24Ga 53: A Three-Dimensional Cubic Network Composed of Interconnected
Cu6Ga 6 Icosahedra, Mg-Centered Ga16 Icosioctahedra, and a Magnesium Lattice.
— Single crystals of the title compound are prepared by reaction of the elements at
800 °C (Ta container in an evacuated SiO2 tube, 2h; >90% yield). Mg35Cu 24Ga53 crystallizes in the cubic space group Fd3m with Z = 4 and is isostructural with K39In80,
K17In41, and the electron-poorer Na35Cd24 Ga56, all of which contain clathrate-II-type cation frameworks. The structure contains empty (Cu,Ga)12 icosahedra and Mg-centered
Ga16 icosioctahedra that are interconnected at every vertex to a compact three-dimensional anion network. The clusters are well-bonded in different sized cavities within a
