Aerobic Oxidation of Formaldehyde Mediated by a Ce-Containing Polyoxometalate under Mild Conditions. — An evaluation of over 50 polyoxometalates reveals
that the complex NaH3[SiW11CeIVO39 ] (I) is a selective and effective catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of formaldehyde to formic acid under very mild conditions. (I) is prepared from Ce(NO3)3 and Na8[SiW11 O39] by electrodialysis and characterized by 183W
NMR, IR and UV/vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, potentiometric titration, and
single crystal XRD (triclinic, space group P1, Z = 1). The results show that (I) is a
monomer (Cs symmetry) in solution and a dimer (Ci symmetry) in the solid state. By
using this catalyst in the oxidation of formaldehyde in the presence of H2O2, 85% conversion of CH2O is achieved with 66% yield of HCOOH. — (KHOLDEEVA*, O. A.;
