NaSn2: A Novel Binary Zintl Phase with 2D Polyanions of Realgar-Type Units
[Sn8]4-. — Single crystals of the title compound are obtained from the reaction of a
stoichiometric mixture of the elements at 500 °C (sealed Nb container, 100 h). NaSn2
crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m with Z = 16. The new structure type
+
consists of two-dimensional ∞2 [S n48 ] polyanions which are separated by layers of Na
cations. Determination of the density of states by TB-LMTO-ASA calculations with
implementation of the electron localization function (ELF) reveals that NaSn2 has all
characteristics of a Zintl phase. NaSn2 dissolves readily in ethylenediamine under the
formation of a reddish brown solution indicative of the [Sn9]4- anions. — (DUBOIS,
