New Noncentrosymmetric Vanadates Sr9Ln(VO4)7 (Ln: Tm, Yb, and Lu): Synthesis, Structure Analysis, and Characterization. — The title compounds are synthesized by solid state reaction of stoichiometric mixtures of SrCO3, V2O5, and Ln2O3 (Ln:
Tm, Yb, Lu; Pt crucible, 1373 K, 150 h). As revealed by powder XRD at room temperature, the compounds are isotypic with Ca3(VO4)2 and crystallize in the space group
R3c with Z = 6. The compounds are further characterized by magnetic susceptibility,
specific heat, dielectric, and second-harmonic generation measurements. The
Sr9Ln(VO4)7 compounds exhibit a reversible ferroelectric—paraelectric phase transition near 950—960 K. The high-temperature phases crystallize in the space group R3m
